Nordic Walking Poles
The great thing about Nordic Walking is that very little equipment and only a small amount of investment is needed. Like any other activity though, Nordic Walking is best enjoyed and best results can be achieved when equipment which has been especially designed is used.
Choosing a quality and correctly sized pair of poles is extremely important, so seeking advice or doing a little research is strongly recommended. When looking at purchasing your own pair of poles, here are a few important points to consider:
 |
1. Quality of Hand Strap
- is it the correct size for your hand?
- does the material breathe?
- does it provide control and proper function?
- is it comfortable?
- do you wish to be able to detach from the pole whilst staying in the strap?
2. Quality of Hand Grip
- synthetic or cork composites are the most popular
- what performance do you seek?
- consider how hot and sweaty conditions would affect the grip.
3. Quality of Pole Shaft
- carbon composites make for lighter and more flexible poles, which gives a better swing movement than heavier adjustable models. Carbon poles also offer superior shock absorbing properties. Fibreglass or carbon-alloy composites are also good quality materials. But beware of cheap aluminium poles (they are likely to break)!
4. Quality of Metal Tip
- long lasting and durable carbide tips are recommended.
5. Quality of Rubber Paw
- how much walking will you do on hard surfaces?
- will you be changing from hard to soft surfaces frequently within single sessions?

Consider your budget but don’t skimp on quality or be fooled by ‘cheap’ imitations as they will most likely end up costing you more money in the long run. As a general rule, a pair of quality poles will cost between $120 and $250.
What to Wear
Shoes The most distinguishing feature between an ordinary fitness or running shoe and a shoe for Nordic walking is the construction of the heel (because of the more forceful heel strike of the Nordic Walking stride).
If you are a regular Nordic Walker then the acquistion of suitable footwear is highly advised. There are now a few shoes on the market which have been designed specifically for the needs of Nordic Walkers and are a wise investment for your feet. If however, you are an occasional Nordic walker then lightweight outdoor or fitness walking shoes will suffice.
Clothing Clothing should be comfortable and made from functional and breathable material. For the more serious Nordic walker athletic leggings and sports tops are recommended.
A handy additional feature for your clothing is the addition of small pockets which can hold the rubber paws of your poles when they are not required.
Accessories
Heart Rate Monitors Improving one’s cardiovascular fitness is one of the main aims of any form of exercise so to enhance performance and ensure that each workout session is achieving the desired fitness benefits, heart rate monitors are a very worthwhile accessory. Easy to use, accurate and reliable they are an exercise enthusiast’s best buddy.
Pedometers Measuring how many steps or kilometres are taken during a walking session with a pedometer, then recording them is one of the best ways to stay motivated (after all, everyone struggles with motivation at some time). Having an accurate record of how much further you walk as the weeks go by gives feelings of achievement and fuel for further goal setting to improve fitness.
Daypacks / Drink Belts For extended walks some sort of carrying system for water, snacks and a basic first aid kit is necessary. Choosing a suitable system which doesn't interfer with the fluid arm swing back and forth of Nordic walking is essential. Slim line back packs or a decent drink belt are the best options.
